KA-BAR Desert Fighting Knife (Serrated)
|
| Review Date: February 10, 2010 |

| This KA-BAR fighting knife is a desert colored version of the popular Black KA-BAR. It features a Kraton G handle (hard, high quality rubber), a 1095 cro-van carbon blade, a black epoxy powder coating on the blade, hilt, and pommel, and a 7" blade. KA-BAR has a foliage green version as well. This knife is great for hunting, camping, survival, and is a good deployment companion for any U.S. soldier. I bought mine in fall 2008 and I've used it mainly for camping and "survival" excursions. The cons of this knife is that the blade is made of carbon steel instead of stainless steel which means when the coating wears away the blade is at risk of rusting. I read in a survival book that you can rub a carbon blade with charcoal to protect it. It also matches the black blade of this KA-BAR and makes any scratches less noticeable. Be warned though, the sheath collects a surprising amount of grit and sand when wearing it on your side. This is bad because as soon as you draw the knife, the grit scratches away the coating. I was very frustrated with this because I coudn't figure out how all that sand was getting caught in the sheath. I knew where it came from but how did it get in there (it seemed the balde was pretty well protected)? KA-BAR says this knife is ideal for sandy conditions (like deserts). Maybe so, but with a leather sheath. Don't let the sheath issue make you think that I don't love this knife, I do. I'm just surprised. In my opinion the fighting knife is better off without the epoxy coating and carbon blade, it should be high carbon stainless steel. Anyway, I recommend this knife to any one who is an outdoor enthuisiast or soldier. It will last a lifetime and possibly save your life when the chips are down! |
